PERACH
PREFACE
Proper education has always been considered the key for the successful development of a child to a self-sufficient, productive and law-abiding adult and to a positive contributing member of the community.Since ancient times, contemplation on the best ways to teach the young has taken place, and special value was given to one-on-one instruction that focuses on the child's tendencies, talent and needs as a means for fulfilling his/her potential. In Biblical time, wise King Solomon proclaimed
"חֲנֹךְ לַנַּעַר עַל־פִּי דַרְכּוֹ; גַּם כִּי־יַזְקִין, לֹא־יָסוּר מִמֶּנָּה׃"
Manifest the notion on the way to educate up younger generations, so they would carry it with them, for the rest of their lives.
PERACH
Israeli Tutoring and Mentoring Project, is a nationwide a-political NGO operating under the auspices of the Weizmann Institute of Science and The Council for Higher Education. Established in 1974, the project involves students in cultural and educational activities with underprivileged children from low socio-economic backgrounds.PERACH’S main goals are to enrich and advance those needy children while, at the same time, helping the student-mentors meet the cost of living and their tuition fees by providing them with a partial scholarship. In addition, PERACH tries to bring closer, people from different backgrounds, to encourage the students' involvement in the community and to allow them to experience first-hand some of the country's most pressing social problems. This way the scholarship has a three-fold-impact: it helps the students pay their tuition fee; it improves the child’s chances for a better future; and ensures the nation of better and more educated citizens.
PERACH'S ACTIVITIES
PERACH'S students serve as tutors in their field of study, for various programs throughout the country. These programs are offered in a variety of areas such as Health and Dental Care, Science Education, Nature and Environment, Law and order, Music and many more. PERACH also operates Science and Enrichment centers in disadvantaged towns and neighborhoods.
INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Being the largest organization of its kind in the world, PERACH has become a source of inspiration and practical support to PERACH-like mentoring programs worldwide. To-date, 20 countries around the globe already operate or are found in initial stages of implementing a PERACH-like program.
INTERNALIZATION OF SOCIAL VALUES OF CONTRIBUTION TO THE COMMUNITY AND OF ASSISTING THE WEAK
Involving students in tutoring and mentoring activities to assist underprivileged children in the community will raise their awareness of the problems and needs in their community. The satisfaction derived from promoting a child will urge them to become more socially active in their community.
